Background and History

Somali Bantu Community Organization was founded on February 2, 1993 in Nairobi, Kenya, by a group of Somali Bantu intellectuals. Their main objective was to assist hundreds and thousands of Somali Bantu refugees who fled from the civil war of Somalia to Kenya.

As a nonprofit organization, SOBCO volunteers were closely collaborated with UNHCR and a number of International Relief Agencies operating in Kenya in support of Refugees Programs. From 1993 – 1994, SOBCO volunteers were involved in programs to resettle over 10,000 Somali Bantus refugees who were facing hardships in refugee camps in Kenya. SOBCO provided them with food, clean water, and shelter. It has a liaison office in Nairobi, Kenya which coordinates the organization’s operations throughout East Africa. SOBCO’s main office in North America is in Clarkston City of Dekalb County in the state of Georgia. It has three branches elsewhere in the United States. These offices are in Ohio, California, and Washington State.
